ATEX and EX Luminaires – Lighting for Hazardous Areas
What does ATEX mean?
ATEX comes from the French “ATmosphères EXplosibles” (explosive atmospheres). It refers to two European directives that regulate equipment used in areas where explosive atmospheres may occur, such as:
- Chemical and petrochemical plants
- Oil and gas facilities
- Grain silos and food processing
- Paint shops, battery charging rooms, and more.
The goal of ATEX is to ensure safety by minimizing the risk of ignition from electrical equipment — including luminaires.
What is an EX luminaire?
An EX luminaire is a light fixture that is specially designed and certified to be safe for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. It will not ignite surrounding gases, vapors, or dust even if something goes wrong inside the luminaire.
EX luminaires are tested and certified to meet strict ATEX requirements, and they carry clear EX marking on the product label.
ATEX Zones
Hazardous areas are divided into zones based on how likely an explosive atmosphere is present:
For gases and vapors:
- Zone 0: Continuous presence of explosive atmosphere.
- Zone 1: Explosive atmosphere likely to occur during normal operation.
- Zone 2: Explosive atmosphere unlikely, or only for a short time.
For combustible dust:
- Zone 20: Continuous presence of explosive dust atmosphere.
- Zone 21: Explosive dust atmosphere likely to occur occasionally.
- Zone 22: Explosive dust atmosphere unlikely, or only for a short time.
The zone classification determines what type of EX luminaire can be installed.
ATEX Marking
An EX luminaire has a label with markings that tell you exactly where it can be used.
Example:
Why EX luminaires are important
- Prevent explosions and ensure workplace safety.
- Meet legal requirements for hazardous area installations.
- Ensure long-term reliability in demanding industrial environments.
