METAL INDUSTRY

A reliable luminaire supplier for the sector for more than 50 years

The metal industry’s challenging conditions put luminaires to a test

I-Valo’s industrial luminaires were created to meet the Finnish industry’s need for lighting solutions that can withstand the challenging industrial conditions. When I-Valo’s first industrial luminaires were designed in the early 1970s, the development work was carried out in collaboration with paper, pulp and metal industry representatives. This guaranteed that the luminaires would meet the needs of the end user. In 1975, I-Valo’s first industrial luminaires were delivered to the Rautaruukki plant in Raahe.

Uncompromising development work continues in the area of modern LED luminaires, with the latest standards and challenging operating conditions considered in their design. I-Valo remains a trusted supplier for many of Europe’s largest, modern power plants.

Retrofit solutions

Because I-Valo’s solutions have a long service life, old discharge lamp luminaires are still in use in numerous applications. I-Valo offers an extensive range of retrofit packages to enable you to upgrade your old luminaires to the more energy-efficient LED solutions. On this website, you can view the available retrofit solutions and find out which modern LED luminaire offers a suitable solution to replace your old I-Valo system.

Outstanding properties

  • solutions for extremely hot conditions
  • high luminous efficacy
  • energy-efficiency
  • excellent anti-glare properties
  • high IP classification (tightness of the casing)
  • the luminaire’s filtering technology keeps the interior parts clean (e.g. removes air-borne chemicals)
  • robust aluminium frame
  • C5 coating classification (very corrosive environments)
  • cover glass options to suit the application (polycarbonate, acrylic, tempered glass)
  • D label (the luminaire’s surface temperature does not exceed 90°C)
  • LED luminaires switch on without delay (cf. discharge lamp luminaires)
  • long life cycle
  • the luminaire being upgradeable (replaceable technology) extends its service life even further
  • a variety of connection options
  • an extensive range of mounting brackets
  • excellent vibration resistance
  • eSense control option

Outdoor areas

A lighting solution in a production plant’s outdoor areas must offer outstanding luminous efficacy and optimal light distribution. The luminaires must also be able to withstand changing weather conditions. In Finland, luminaires must function reliably in sub-zero temperatures. In addition, mounting brackets must withstand the strain caused by wind, for example.

An outdoor lighting solution for a production plant typically encompasses area lighting (e.g. parking areas, streets) and outdoor process areas, loading bays, walls and canopies and covers located near the buildings.

Area lighting:

  • High luminous flux
  • Anti-glare optics
  • CLO option
  • Aluminum body with C5 corrosion class coating
  • A wide range of mounting brackets

Building walls, canopies, loading bays, access platforms

  • Cover glass options (acrylic, polycarbonate and glass)
  • Luminaire’s long service life and upgradeability
  • Energy-efficiency
  • eSense control option
  • Anti-glare optics
  • High IK and IP classifications
  • Aluminum body with C5 corrosion class coating
  • A wide range of mounting brackets, for example pipe and railing brackets for access platforms
  • Special connectors and cables as optional accessories
  • Possibility to tailor the solution to customer needs
  • Filter options and filter shields

Hot process premises

Because of their high ambient temperatures, metal industry process premises typically make challenging installation environments for LED luminaires. Often, impurities occur in the air and installation heights in the spaces vary. I-Valo offers a wide range of industrial LED luminaires that can be installed at different heights. In renovation projects, the old highbay luminaires with a discharge lamp can be replaced with a XENRE luminaire, which is available with a wide and medium-wide light distribution. If your property is equipped with I-Valo’s discharge lamp highbay luminaires, their mounting rails can be utilised for the installation of XENRE luminaires.

If the air contains impurities, we recommend the use of a dual-effect filter. A dual-effect filter with a metal casing is the most durable choice for hot conditions. The filter keeps the LEDs and optics clean, helping the luminaire retain its luminous efficacy even in challenging conditions.

I-Valo’s luminaires also offer excellent resistance to chemicals. The standard models come with a polyester coating but versions with an epoxy coating are also available. For example, the HITE LED luminaire always comes with an epoxy coating because epoxy is more resistant to extreme temperatures.

The products specified below are specially designed for hot and warm conditions, with their ambient temperatures ranging from +60°C up to +110°C, depending on the model. Such spaces in the metal industry include blast furnaces, steel melting shops, coke ovens, hot and cold rolling mills and galvanization lines.

Production facilities

Our range offers suitable lighting solutions for production spaces that do not have particularly high ambient temperatures but may contain various particles, gases or fumes. In this case also, filters play an important role in ensuring that the luminaire’s luminous efficacy remains at a high level. Such spaces include machine manufacturing plants and repair shops, machining and part manufacturing facilities, sheet and welding shops, laboratories and control rooms.

Clean spaces

There are numerous industrial facilities where impurities or temperatures do not set special requirements for the lighting solution, such as distribution centres and warehouses. In such spaces, luminaires equipped with a small GORE pressure valve or a dust filter, rather than a dual-effect filter, can be used.

Depending on the usage rate of the premises, a lighting control system may also be a feasible option. The quality of lighting should never be compromised because work areas must always be safe and convenient to use. However, if the spaces are unoccupied for prolonged periods of time, which is often the case with warehouses, corridors and staircases, the lights should be switched off or dimmed to save energy. The eSense control system enables lighting control on the basis of presence detection. The master luminaire controls the slave luminaires via a wireless connection so that lights switch on as the user moves along the spaces.

Professional lighting design

To achieve an optimal lighting solution for production lines and process premises, professional lighting design is a must. I-Valo has more than five decades of experience of designing lighting solution for metal industry applications. In addition to having in-house lighting design operations, we also collaborate with the sector’s leading designers. In design, attention must be paid to the process requirements and any challenges arising from the positioning of the luminaires. Our wide range of brackets allows you to install luminaires in any location where illumination is needed. In the choice of the luminaires, the temperature, humidity and any impurities at the installation location must be considered.

Factors that influence the choice of the luminaires and lighting calculations are determined carefully in collaboration with the client before the commencement of the design work. When necessary, our designer visits the installation site.

DIALux Evo

In its lighting design, I-Valo uses the German DIALux Evo lighting design program. The software can be used to calculate an optimised lighting solution for the space in accordance with lighting standards, enabling the procurement of the correct number of luminaires. I-Valo is DIAL’s Premium Partner, which enables us to offer a lighting catalogue or a plug-in containing all our luminaires to designers who use the free DIALux software. With the plug-in, it is easy to browse and select our products directly via the calculation program.

Our professional lighting design team can create comprehensive calculations, encompassing the numbers and types of luminaires required, lux levels for each space, 3D models of the spaces and false colour images of the lighting levels.
