Keljonlahti Power Plant

Completed in 2010, the Keljonlahti power plant is the larger of the two plants operated by Alva-yhtiöt, an electricity, water, and district heating company owned by the City of Jyväskylä. The plant can operate in combined heat and power (CHP) mode to produce both heat and electricity, in condensing mode to generate electricity only, or in reduction mode to produce heat alone.

Lighting challenges in complex structures

Inside the power plant, maintenance platforms and process areas form a complex network of multi-level structures where access is often difficult.

Lighting must reach exactly where maintenance work is performed, without creating shadows or glare that could compromise safety.

With numerous steel platforms and open grating floors, glare control is critical — light must remain comfortable even when shining through multiple levels.

 

 

Solution – robust, serviceable luminaires

I-Valo’s durable, easy-to-maintain luminaires were chosen to ensure safe, uniform, and glare-free illumination throughout the facility.

Since the plant’s opening, I-Valo luminaires have been in use from the very beginning — and in recent years, majority of the traditional luminaires have been retrofitted with energy-efficient LED technology.

The upgrade process is ongoing, carried out in stages as part of the plant’s long-term modernization plan, and I-Valo continues to be the trusted partner for these upgrades.

 

 

 

Simplicity in service and maintenance

Because of the challenging locations, ease of maintenance was a key requirement. I-Valo luminaires are designed for quick and safe servicing, minimizing downtime and maintenance risks in elevated or hard-to-reach areas.

I-Valo Fit for the Future products are purpose-built for these demanding conditions, featuring easily replaceable LED gear trays that make maintenance and upgrades fast, safe, and cost-efficient.

By September 2025, more than 800 of these retrofit packages have been delivered to the project, ensuring long-term serviceability and future-proof performance.

Customer experience and cooperation

The customer appreciates I-Valo’s hands-on approach and continuous partnership. The I-Valo sales representative visits the site annually, allowing both parties to review the luminaires in operation and discuss ongoing needs.

In addition, sample luminaires are provided for testing — giving the maintenance team the opportunity to see the products in action before final selections are made.
